Scene 1
Narrator: Nazareth-a small town in Israel. That’s where this story happened; that’s where the story of the first Christmas began, a long long time ago. And that’s where a girl named Mary lived- yes, you can see her right there- reading from the holy book. Little did she know how this day would change her life forever.
(Curtain rises. Young Mary is in a room in her home-reading from a scroll)
Mary: “The Lord is my refuge, and you make the Most High your dwelling no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways….”
(Angel Gabriel enters as Mary is reading)
Oh my Lord! Who are you? How did you come inside!
AG: You just read about me and can’t recognise who I am?
Mary: What? I was reading about…angels…are you…an angel?
AG: (Smiling) Of course, dear Mary. (Mary bows) I’ve come to share greetings from high above as you have been chosen by the Almighty God.
Mary: I’m chosen? For what? What can I ever do for God?
AG: God wants you to be the mother of the Saviour of all mankind. He will be the descendant of King David, and will reign over God’s people forever!
Mary: But how is this…? I am about to get married!
AG: The Holy Spirit will be with you always. You will have a son whom you should call Jesus. Don’t worry about Joseph. He will accept you. I’m on my way to deliver him God’s message!
(Music begins. Mary bows before the angel as he exits)
SONG : BE BORN IN ME- Fransesca Battisteli
(This can be sung as solo/choir…or track played… with Mary doing choreography/actions on stage alone or with more dancers)
(Mary exits after song)
Scene 2
Narrator: Joseph, Mary’s betrothed, also got a visit from Gabriel, the angel who we just now saw with young Mary. He prepared himself to take up the responsibility of becoming the father of God’s son. Sure enough, Jesus was born to this chosen couple, in Bethlehem. (Baby crying sound in background) But who did God choose to share this great news with? Let’s see.
(4 shepherds on stage walking)
Shepherd 1: I can’t wait to get home. I’m so tired! (yawning)
Shepherd 2: Its past midnight for sure. We better get moving now. (to Shepherd 3) Do you have any of that bread left?
Shepherd 3: No no. We finished them all around two hours back, remember.
Shepherd 2: (disappointed) Seriously? I had brought so many!
(Blinding light on stage)
Shepherd 4: Look guys! What’s that light?
(Music heard. Shepherds look amazed and listen. AG and 2 angels can come on stage as choir sings.)
SONG: A KING IS BORN – Don Moen (First stanza & Chorus twice)
(Angels exit)
Shepherd 3: A king? A Holy child? Here? In Bethlehem?
Shepherd 1: This is amazing! We have to go and see him!
Shepherd 4: He must be the Messiah! Let’s go!
(Shepherds exit together)
Scene 3
(Joseph and Mary enter with baby Jesus to the manger.)
Joseph: God has surely blessed us, Mary. Just when I almost lost hope, He showed us this stable.
Mary: You are right, dear.  (Looking at the baby) Such a beautiful baby boy. “Where God guides, He provides”.
Joseph: Amen to that. Hmm… I wonder how the night sky is so bright today.
(Music begins and choir sings. Nativity tableau formed during the song.
SONG: DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR? (popular Christmas hymn)
*Shepherds enter and sit near the baby during the 1st and 2nd stanza
* 3 wise men enter and give their gifts during 3rd stanza (can start entering from behind audience earlier during the song)
* AG and angels enter during 4th stanza)
Narrator: Now that’s what happened on the first Christmas day. A tiny baby, who grew up to bring peace and salvation. He was born in a lowly manger in Bethlehem on that holy night and died on the cross to pay the price for our sins. Just like Mary submitted herself for Jesus to be born in her, He has to be born in us too; in our hearts. We need that thrill of hope that brings peace to this weary world which is still pining in sin, suffering and sorrow.
(If this is the last event of your programme, the choir can sing ‘SILENT NIGHT’.)
(Drop curtain)
